渡良瀬遊水地の夏散歩【イラストと画像あり】

渡良瀬遊水地は、栃木県の南端に位置し、栃木・群馬・埼玉・茨城の4県にまたがる面積33km²、総貯水容量2億m³という日本最大級の遊水地！
今回は、自然観察へ出かけましたので、思い出のレポートを！

概要

栃木県や群馬県、埼玉県、茨城県の４県にまたがる広大な湿地です。

もともとは足尾鉱毒事件による毒を沈殿させることを目的に昭和５年に完成した人工的な遊水地。
面積33km²という広大な湿地です。その広大さは歩いて巡るのは無理！ってぐらい広いですよ！
なんと東京ドーム２００個ぶん！！


現在は、豊かな自然と貴重な動植物が生息する貴重な土地です。
敷地内には、コウノトリの人工巣搭が設置され、全国でも貴重な繁殖地としても有名です。

また、２０１２年には、ラムサール条約にも登録され、冬は多くの猛禽類が見られバードウォッチャーで賑わいます。

夏場はどんな状況かな？
夏の渡良瀬遊水地に自然観察ピクニックへ出かけてきました！

広大な葦原

春先に、訪れた際は葦焼きが行われたばかりで一面焼け野原だった渡良瀬遊水地ですが・・・
夏は、広大な葦の原が広がっていましたよ！広大な緑の大海原！

渡良瀬と言えばコウノトリ

まず、渡良瀬遊水地といえばコウノトリ！
ここでは、絶滅危惧種で国の天然記念物にも指定されているコウノトリのために人工巣搭を設置し、繁殖の手助けをしています。
この日もコウノトリさんいらっしゃいました。
春先はまだ小さかったヒナも、大きくなったかな？

コウノトリは、絶滅危惧種。
つまり、世界でも著しく数を減らしている野鳥です。

日本には昔から普通に生息していたコウノトリですが、実は１９７１年ごろ、日本で繁殖生息する（国内野生個体）は一度消滅。
つまり日本での野生個体は絶滅したというわけです。

原因は、戦前の乱獲、第二次世界大戦の影響や、その後の農薬散布によると言われています。
ほとんどの場合、生物の絶滅は人間が起因なのが悲しいです。

コウノトリ復活プロジェクト

その後、海外から幼鳥を譲り受けて、国内繁殖の取り組みがスタートしました。
コウノトリ復活大作戦！ですね。
現在、兵庫県豊岡市、千葉県野田市をはじめ全国各地でコウノトリの保全と野生復帰を目指した活動が行われています。
そして、2022年3月には野外個体数250羽とまでになりました。

渡良瀬遊水地内では、令和２年5月に東日本で初めてヒナが誕生！
そしてその後は、多くのコウノトリが渡良瀬遊水地へ飛来するようになりました。
栃木市では、渡良瀬遊水地内の更なるコウノトリの野生復帰・定着を目指して、ふるさと納税などを活用して人工巣塔2基を設置。

一度この国から姿を消したコウノトリは、人々の努力と熱意によって蘇り、そして現在も渡良瀬遊水地において、彼らを守る活動は続けられているのです。

そして、この広大な湿地にはコウノトリだけではなく多くの野鳥たちや様々な動物たちが生活をしていますよ。
貴重な動植物の宝庫というわけです。

さて、冬場は多くの猛禽類が見られるこの湿地ですが、この時期の渡良瀬遊水地は小鳥達が主役！
その中でも、特別目立っていたのがオオヨシキリとコヨシキリ！
今回はもうお腹いっぱいだよ～～と思うほどに、「ギョギョシ！ギョギョシ！！」と大声で鳴く彼らを目にすることができました。

他には、カッコウやホトトギスなどの声もたくさん聞こえていましたよ。

更に、ここに住む野生動物は鳥類だけではありません。

朝一番にまず出会ったのは若いイノシシさん。
ここにはたくさんのイノシシが生息しているそうで、あちこちに注意書きがありましたよ。
「見かけたら刺激をしないこと！」
この写真も遠く離れた場所から、望遠で撮影しました。
特に春先はちびっこウリ坊を連れた母イノシシさんも多いので、神経質になってるんですね。
人間も動物も、親の気持ちって一緒だよね。

今回は、出会いませんでしたがここには鹿もたくさん住んでいるそうです。

もちろん、キツネやタヌキも住んでいます。
この日は、タヌキさんがひょっこり。

また、こちらはイタチ。

ちょこちょこと走り回っては、私の方を気にしていたので・・・驚かさないようにじっと立ち止まっていると、向こうからちょこちょこと走り寄ってきて私のことをじっと観察していましたよ。

かわいいですね。

このように、この広大な湿地を歩くだけで様々な生き物たちに出会うことができるのです！

また、見どころは動物だけではありません。
植物や草花、そしてそれに群がる虫たちも見どころです。

桑の実

ちょうどこの時期は、敷地内のあちこちで桑の実がたわわに、実っていました。
歩いていると、足元に真っ赤に染まった鳥のフンを見る事も多く、鳥にも人気の実のようです。
もちろん人が食べても甘酸っぱくおいしい桑の実。
ジャムにするのか、たくさんちぎっている人も見かけました。

また、あまり街中では見かけない草花もありました。

遊水地内には、貴重な植物もたくさん自生しています。
こちらは、シロバナタカアザミ。
背の高いアザミで、下を向いて咲く白い花が特徴です。
こんなに背が高いアザミをみたのはじめてでした。

広大な湿地には、葦はもちろんのこと、たくさんの野の花が咲き乱れ、その中をチョウたちが舞い、ミツバチやクマバチが忙しく飛び回っていました。
寒い時期に来たときは、昆虫たちの活動はあまり見る事がありませんでした。
だから、今回は昆虫たちの観察もとっても楽しかったです。

このように、渡良瀬遊水地は多種多様の動植物が生息し、そこはまるで生き物の楽園のようでした。
そこを歩き、生き物を観察するだけで、それぞれの生命が直接的間接的に関係しあい、影響をしあい、繋がり合い存在している様を肌身を持って感じることが出来ます。

ここは生物多様性という意味では、とっても豊かな土地なんだと感じました。

お昼ご飯はなんだろな？？

お昼は簡単な、煮込みスパゲティ。
ゆで汁が出ないので、外でお昼を作るときによく作るメニューですよ！

緑の海を眺めながら、高台でのんびり昼食をとったら・・・張り切って後半の散策スタート！
お昼過ぎからはお日様の威力が絶大なので、水分補給しながら楽しみます！

エイリアン現る？外来生物！

大きな葉っぱの大きな植物の正体

オオブタクサ

さて、今回渡良瀬遊水地を散策していてたくさん見かけたのが・・・こちらのオオブタクサ。
とっても大きな葉っぱで、とっても背が高い植物です。
とにかくあちこちで幅を利かせて、とても目立っていました。

オオブタクサは重点対策外来種に指定されています。
聞いたことがあるな・・・と思ったら、私の花粉アレルギーの原因ブタクサの親戚でした。
つらいのよね・・・花粉症。
ちなみに、ブタクサと同じでこのオオブタクサも花粉症の原因だそうですよ。

オオブタクサは無法者？

このオオブタクサは、成長すると３ｍにもなると言われる植物！
成長が早く、しかも３ｍにもなるため周囲の在来種の植物に日光があたらず、周囲で在来種が育たなくなってしまうそうです。
う～～む・・・独り占め！

どこを見もオオブタクサが生えていない場所がなかったほどです。

オオブタクサは、海外から輸入された大豆にくっついて日本に上陸したと言われています。
畑地，樹園地，牧草地，河川敷，路傍，荒地，堤防などの日本各地の肥沃な土地に根を張り、現在各地で物議を醸している植物のようです。
渡良瀬も肥沃な湿地なので、オオブタクサが生きるのは都合のいい土地なんでしょうね。

これは、重点対策外来種に指定されています。
つまり、【日本の在来種を脅かす存在】と言われ全国的に問題視されている植物なのです。
オオブタクサに悪意はなくとも、平和な在来種の楽園にやってきたエイリアン。
在来種の浴びるはずの日光や栄養を独り占めし、他の在来種の存在を脅かす存在なのです。
（ブラックバスなどの問題も同じですね）

外来種の問題

よく聞く【外来種問題】ですが、一体何が問題なのでしょうか？
前回、絶滅危惧種の問題を記事にしましたが、根本的には同じ問題です。

世界中には、様々な気候の多様な地域が存在します。
もちろん、そこに住む生命も多様で、地球全体を見渡したときに豊かな生物多様性が守られています。
それは、生命が誕生して今まで、長い年月をかけて育まれたものです。

そんな絶妙のバランスで成り立っている生態系の中に、人間の手によって外来種が持ち込まれます。
すると、在来種達は外来種に対する抵抗力を持たない為に、破壊的なダメージを受けることがあるのです。

結末は身の破滅？

もちろん、全ての外来生物が破壊的になるとは言えません。
在来種が外来種への抵抗力を持たない様に、外来種も在来種への抵抗力がありません。
ですので、外来種でも在来種に敗れ定着できずに、滅んでしまうことも多いのです。

しかし、うまく環境に定着し天敵もいない外来種が時々現れます。
そんな外来種は、無抵抗な在来種を破壊し尽くし、生態系を壊してしまうのです。
そして、その結末は、自身の破滅へ繋がっていきます。
つまり、一度ボロボロになった生態系は、破壊行為をした種にも恵のない環境になってしまうのです。

オオブタクサの駆除

こんなにも生物多様性に恵まれたこの湿地にも、オオブタクサのような対策の必要な外来種が繁殖しています。
一見緑豊かに見える場所。
しかし、見えない脅威が迫っていることを知って少し愕然たる思いとなりました。

ちなみに、この植物は（幸い？）１年草。
そのため、種を落とす前に刈り取ることで繁殖を防ぐことができるのだそうです。
ここでも、時期にあわせてボランティアや市などによってブタクサをはじめほかの外来植物を排除する活動が行われているそうです。

人の手によって入って来た外来種。
人が自らの手で排除することで貴重な在来種を守るという運動はとても大切だなと感じますね。

また、夕暮れ時に散策をしていると・・・何やら昔のTVゲームのような大きな音が。
「なんの鳥だろう？？」と見てみると・・・ガビチョウ！
いや・・・ガビチョウにしては何か違う？？と思って図鑑で調べてみたらカオジロガビチョウでした！

はじめてみたよ～～～～！

しかし、この子も、ガビチョウと同じく外来種！
愛玩用に輸入されたものが、飼育に手がかかることから放鳥されたもの。
それが定着したようです。

北関東に主に定着し、繁殖しているということで・・・渡良瀬遊水地にいるのも納得！

ガビチョウも含め、特定外来生物（重要対策外来種）に指定されています。
特定外来生物とは、先ほどのオオブタクサには付いていなかった指定です。
これは、外来生物法により厳しい規制や罰則が準備されている外来種のことです。

ここは専門家の間でも意見が分かれるようなのですが
現在彼らが、何か在来種に害を及ぼしているようなことは明らかにはなっていません。
しかし、自然環境というのはそれぞれの生き物の繊細かつ微妙な関係性のうえに成り立つもの。
一見、人の目には何の悪影響もないように見える可愛いこの外来生物。
しかし、我々の気づかない部分で、何か在来種に悪影響を及ぼしている可能性もゼロとは言えませんよね。

この愛らしく美しい小鳥も、生物多様性という点においては、やはりあまり良い存在ではないと言えそうです。

とはいえ、自分の意志とは関係なく、日本に連れてこられて
しかも飼いにくいという理由で放鳥されるなんて。
人間はなんて身勝手なことか・・・。
毎回この問題を目の当たりにするにつけ、胸が苦しくなりますね。

まとめ

前回、訪れた際はヨシ焼きの後でした。
その時は何もない広大な湿地という風情だった渡良瀬遊水地。
しかし、今回は前回とがらりと様相を変えていました。

太陽が燦燦と照り付け、目の前には溺れそうなくらい青々とした葦の大草原！
そこからは、ひっきりなしにオオヨシキリやホオジロの声！
藪からはウグイスがさえずっていました。
虫たちは忙しく花々の間を飛び回り、カッコウの声が遊水地内にこだまし。
ふと子連れのキジがひょっこりと姿を現したかと思うと、獣たちが草陰で蠢く気配があちこちに。

ああ命輝く季節なんだな～～。
燦燦と照り輝く太陽に、じりじりと肌を焼かれながら・・・そう感じた探検でした！

静かなる環境破壊に目を向けて

また、この広大な湿地は多種多様な動植物で構成されていることにも改めて気が付きました。
そして、この自然豊かに見える場所にも外来生物が入り込んでいることも・・・。
一見、緑豊か見えるにも、静かな懸念材料が潜んでいるのです。

人のせいで起こった事態は、人の手でなんとかするしかありません。
目に見えて悪影響が出始めてからでは手遅れなのですから・・・。

この地で、コウノトリの保護や外来生物排除の活動が行われている意義というものも、改めて感じ入りました。
そして、私自身はどう行動するべきかを考えさせられた散策でありました。
