ヨシゴイの生態と特徴【イラストと写真】

あれはだれ？？

春真っ盛りの5月、早朝に近所を散歩していると『オーオーオー』と少し苦しそうな声が・・・。
ん？あれはもしかして・・・？
私は、その鳴き声を耳にすると【夏がやってくるな〜】と嬉しくなってきます。

今日は、ミョウガの妖精と野鳥界では人気の、ヨシゴイについて書いてみたいと思います。

ヨシゴイの特徴

ヨシゴイはペリカン目サギ科ヨシゴイ属の野鳥！
日本に飛来するサギ類の中では、なんと最小のサギなのです。

サギというと、ダイサギやアオサギなんかが一番に思い浮かぶと思いますが、それに比べるとだいぶ小さくて驚きますよ。

ちなみに、一般的に、大型のサギには【サギ】小型のサギには【ゴイ】という名が付いていますよ。
ダイサギやアオサギと比べると、ずんぐりむっくりとしたキュートな見た目が特徴です。

ちょっとヌルッとしたルックスと見た目の質感が、茗荷（ミョウガ）を連想させることから茗荷の妖精と親しまれています。

メスは胸に縦線が

サギ類の多くは雌雄同色のものが多いのです。
しかし、ヨシゴイちゃんはヌルッと微妙な雌雄異色です。

オスは、赤味のかかった茶褐色の体色で、頭部がほんのり青みを帯びています。
一方、メスは、頭部の青みは少なく、胸に明瞭な縦斑が５本ほど入っています。

沼地などの茂みの中に隠れている様子は、まさにミョウガそっくり！
ミョウガの妖精と命名した人のネーミングセンスには最大限の敬意をはらいたいなと思います（笑）

私が初めてヨシゴイを見た時の第一印象は【ヌルッとしていて足が太いな！】でした。
黄色いがっしりとした足で、水草の間を静かに歩き回る様子が印象的でしたよ！

一般的な野鳥（スズメ目など）は、地面を歩き回るようにはできていません。
どちらかというと、飛ぶ・跳ねるといった行動が想定されて体がデザインされています。

しかし、サギの仲間は足で稼ぐ昔気質の刑事タイプ。
太い足はガッチリ地面や草を掴み、水の流れや草のしなりに負けないようにできています。
そして、ゆっくりゆっくり歩きながら獲物を探すのです。

その為、後指が大きく発達しているのが特徴で、がっしり安定感のある太めの足を持っています。

ヨシゴイの生態

日本での観察時期

ヨシゴイは、冬の時期を東南アジアやインド南東などで過ごします。
そして、夏鳥として繁殖のために日本にやってきます。
しかし、ここでも彼らのヌルッとした性格が出ています。
ぬるぬるしすぎですか？笑

5月ぐらいになると、いつの間にかやってきて地味に『オーオーオー』と鳴き始め・・・
そして、8月下旬から9月上旬ぐらいになると、いつの間にかいなくなっているのです。

基本的に隠れて暮らす地味目な性格なので、観察もしにくいですし、気づいたらもう居ないという・・・
まさに「妖精」か「妖怪」か？ってかんじ。

私はそんなヌルッと妖精系野鳥のヨシゴイの大ファンなんですよ。

どこに住んでるの？

ヨシゴイは、湿地・湖沼・池・河川などの水辺に住んでいます。
主に、ヒメガマの茂みを好み、1日の大半を茂みの中で過ごします。

名前に葦という字が入っていますが、ヨシ原よりもガマやフトイが茂る環境を好みます。
看板に偽りアリ？？

また、採餌のために水田やハス田など開けた場所に出てくることも稀にあります。

なかなか姿を見せない

時々ヌルッと飛び出しますよ！

ヨシゴイを観察するときのポイントは、とにかく気長に待つ！
これが一番。
なにせ茂みの中に隠れているんですもん。
そもそもあまり鳴く鳥ではありません。
だから、ヨシゴイのいそうなガマの茂みを見つけたらじっと待つ！忍耐あるのみ！

すると、茂みの間から顔をヌルッと出しサッと飛び出してきます。
しかし、飛んでいるのはごく短い間だけ。
すぐに、茂みの間に着陸すると、ゆっくり茂みの奥へ歩いて隠れてしまいます。

特に、早朝や夕暮れ時に活動的になるので、その時間にじ～～～っと待つのが得策ですよ。

必殺ガマの術

そんなヨシゴイちゃんですが、敵が迫った時には得意の必殺技を持っています！
人間も彼らにとっては脅威の対象ですので、観察していると、この必殺技を受ける危険があります。

その必殺技とは【ガマの茎になりきるの術！】

擬態ですね。
この得意技はというと・・・首を天に向けてすっと伸ばし、顔を上部にもたげ、じっと動かない！というもの。
ガマの茎になりきって、敵が気づかずに通り過ぎるのを待つという技なのです。

ん～～～～確かに、ガマの茎に見えるような・・・？？？
そうでないような？？？

当の本人は、この技に絶大の信頼を持っている様子。
なぜならば、一度この技を発動するとちょっとやそっとでは解除しないからです！
しれっと近づいて行っても、全く微動だにせず、意外な近距離まで近づける場合があります（笑）

しかし、あんまり近づきすぎないでやってください。
脅威を感じ引っ越ししてしまうかもしれませんし、何より自信満々で技を繰り出した彼らのプライドを傷つけることになりますもの。

何を食べてるの？

ヨシゴイは、小型の魚や甲殻類などを食べています。
茎にしがみ付き、じっと水面を見ながら獲物が通りかかるのを待ちます。
そして、獲物が近づくとバッ！と太い嘴で捕獲！
さすが鷺の仲間です。

この嘴には、両サイドに細かい突起がついていて、くわえた獲物を取り逃すことはありません。

また、興味深いのが彼らの住む環境と採餌行動に合理的な関係性があるということ。

ヨシゴイの住むガマの群生地や蓮などの浮葉植物は、ヨシゴイの繁殖する夏になると一気に水面に広がります。
この茂った植物に紛れ、ヨシゴイたちはじっと魚などがやってくるのを待っているのですが
魚にとっても、植物の茂みは絶好の隠れ場。

ですので、ヨシゴイの待つ植物の茂みは、結果的に魚たちの集まる環境になっているのです。

植物との共同狩り？

また、植物が水面一杯に生い茂ると、水中の酸素濃度が低下。
そこで、魚たちは空気を吸おうと水面に顔を出してパクパクやり始めます。

こうなるとヨシゴイにとっては絶好のチャンスです！
水面に上がってきた魚を、片っ端から捕まえていきます。

魚たちの隠れ家、そして水中の酸素濃度の低下、ヨシゴイは植物の力を借りて効率良く狩をしているのです。
小さいけれど賢いね。

繁殖

ヒナが生まれるとよく飛び回る

ヨシゴイは一夫一妻の仲良し夫婦。
抱卵から子育てまで、夫婦力を合わせて行います。

6月ごろに４〜８個ほどの卵を産み、6月下旬ごろにはヒナが孵化し始めます。
ヒナは孵化後10日ほどで巣から出て歩き回るという成長の速さ！
親鳥に給餌を受けながら『ケケケ！ケッケッケッ！』と鳴き始めます。

この声はとても大きいので、姿は見えなくともヒナたちの孵化を感じることができます。

孵化後１ヶ月ほど経つと、ヒナたちも飛べるようになり茂みの中から出てきます。
この辺りになってくると、親鳥の『オーオーオー』も雛の『ケケケ！』も聞こえなくなっていきます。

そして、8月の下旬になる頃には、いつの間にか姿を消しているのです。
妖精さん、また来年。

準絶滅危惧種

そんな可愛いヨシゴイですが、環境省の発表する日本のレッドリストにおいて準絶滅危惧種に指定されています。

これには大きく２つの理由があると考えられています。

外来種の影響

ここでもブラックバスの影響が

ヨシゴイの住む湖沼や河川などでは、ブラックバスの繁殖が拡大しています。
そのため、モツゴなどの小型の魚類やザリガニなどの甲殻類の数が大幅に減少しています。

このような小型水生動物を餌としている、サギ類・カイツブリ・カワセミなどの野鳥は
間接的にブラックバスなど外来種の影響を受けているのです。

ヨシゴイは特に、水生植物の上で眼下を通りかかる小型動物を捕獲しています。
ですので、大型の湖沼などよりも、比較的こじんまりとした湖沼を好みます。

こういった小さな沼などほど、外来種の影響は短期間で出てくると考えられています。
湖沼と行っても大小様々！色々な環境があって、初めて自然の生態系は機能していると改めて考えさせられます。

護岸工事

河川の氾濫や堤防の崩壊などを防ぐために、護岸工事が全国で行われています。
DVDなどで【男はつらいよ】を見るとよくわかると思うのですが、一作目と後期では、あの寅さんが歩く江戸川河川敷の様子が大きく違います。

護岸工事は、その名の通り岸を守るための工事です。
ですので、岸近くに自生している植物の植生を変えてしまいます。

ヨシゴイの住むガマは、湖沼や河川の比較的岸寄りで生活している植物です。
つまり、彼らの住みやすい環境が減っているというのも数を減らしている大きな要因であるわけ。

しかし、最近は植生護岸工という方法も積極的に行われています！
従来のコンクリートブロックによる護岸工ではなく、植生を持たせた護岸工が広がって行っているのです。
この方法が環境を守るために有効な手段であることを願います。

今回は私の大好きなぬるカワ系野鳥、ヨシゴイをご紹介しました。

同じ水辺の野鳥でもカワセミのようにスター性はないヨシゴイちゃんですが
しかし、よくよく観察していると、すごく愛嬌のある仕草や生態をしていて個人的イチオシの野鳥です。

近年、数を減らしている鳥ですが、問題を把握し解決へ向かって進んでいってくれればと願ってやみません。

必殺ガマの術を見られなくなる日が来るなんて思うと切なすぎる～～～～～！（よね？？）
そのためにも、正しい理解や生態系の保全をしっかり考えていきたいですね！
