ウグイスの特徴といえば、春告げ鳥ともいわれる所以となったあの鳴き声。

ホ～～ホケキョ！！！

日本人なら子供から大人まで誰でも知っているウグイスの鳴き声！
その鳴き声の美しさは日本三鳴鳥に数えられるほど。（あとの２匹はオオルリとコマドリ）


でも、その姿を見たことがある人は意外と少ないのではないでしょうか？

梅に鶯！と昔から言いますので
「はいはい！あの梅の花にやってくるウグイス色のきれいな鳥でしょう？」という人も多いようです。
しかし、そういう人がいうウグイスは実はメジロの場合が多いのです。

あんなに声がきこえてくるのに・・・姿はどこなの？？

ウグイスはちょっと地味

さて、ウグイスはどういう姿をしているでしょうか？

ウグイスはオスが１６ｃｍメスは１４ｃｍくらいです。
つまり、ほとんどスズメと同じようなサイズですよ。

雌雄同色（オスもメスも同じ色柄）で、背面はグレーがかったオリーブグリーンや茶やベージュがまざったような地味な色です。
う～～んメジロほどパッとする色ではないんですよね。
つまり、とってもシックな色です。

お腹は白くて足はピンクっぽいお色。
眉毛のように見える白い媚斑がハッキリしているのも特徴です。

また、つぶらな瞳が愛らしい野鳥ですよ。

ウグイスは実は留鳥

早春になると、あちこちで「ホーホケキョ！」と美しく大きな音量で鳴いているウグイス。
なんと１日に１０００回以上鳴くこともあるとか・・・・。
喉が心配になるくらいですね。

なので、ウグイスは春にしかいないと思っている方も多いと思います。

しかし、ウグイスは留鳥。
つまりは、１年中日本に住んでいる鳥です。
（しかも日本全国どこにでもいる鳥です。）

では、なぜ、ホーホケキョは早春にしか聞こえてこないのか？
それは、ウグイスは早春にはわりと平野部にいることが多いから。

実は、ウグイスは夏にもホーホケキョと鳴いています。
春が深まると山へ帰り夏には巣営をし子育てをするんですよ。
なので、登山をする人にとってはウグイスのホーホケキョは定番の鳥の声です。
逆に、登山をしない人だと「ホーホケキョは春だけよね」ってなるわけ。

秋冬はホーホケキョとは鳴かない

では、春夏以外のその他の季節は鳴かないの？？？
いえいえ、ちゃんと鳴きますよ。
しかし、ホーホケキョとは鳴きません。
ウグイスは春夏以外は「ヂャッ　ヂャッ」と鳴きます。
なんて地味な鳴き声なのか・・・。
しかし、その地味な姿にはむしろこの「ヂャッ　ヂャッ」という声の方がしっくりくるような気もしますね。

ウグイスは何を食べてるの？

ウグイスは、春や夏場は主に虫を食べています。
また、秋冬になると植物の種や果実を主に食べていますよ。
やっぱり、春夏はたくさん鳴いて繁殖し子育てもこなさなくてはならないのでエネルギーが必要なんでしょうね。

声はすれども姿は見えぬ・・・

ウグイスの鳴き声は、日本人ならだれもが知っている春の定番。
しかし、先ほども書きました通り・・・姿を知っている人は意外にも多くないのが現状です。

なぜなのか？

それは、ウグイスがなかなか姿を見せてくれない鳥だから！！

ウグイスはどこに住んでいる？

ウグイスは基本的に、平地から高山まで広く分布している鳥です。
そして、笹の生い茂った場所や藪の中などに好んで住んでいます。
つまり、ごちゃごちゃしてじめっとした場所にいるので外からはなかなか見る事ができないんです。

ウグイスは木の上にいると思っている人が多いんじゃないでしょうか？
しかし、いくら木の上を探してもいるのはメジロです（笑）

歌がうまいほうがモテる！

まだ寒さの残る初春のころ・・・
ウグイスがさえずりの練習をしているのを聞いたことがある人はいませんか？

ほ～～～～～・・・ほ～～～～～～～～～～・・・ほ～～～～～～～～～～～～～・・・・

っと鳴いていて、なかなか「ホケキョ！」と言えない個体なんかがいますね。
聞いてるとこっちが力が入ってしまいます。
思わず「頑張れ！！」と声をかけたくなるような、「こいつ下手だな～～」って個体もいますよね。

練習頑張ります

微笑ましくて思わずくすっと笑ってしまいそうに、なりますが、本人たちは必死です。
なぜならば、ホ～～ホケキョを上手く歌える個体のほうが、モテるから！！！

モテることは大事なこと

モテるということは、繁殖ができる！子孫が残せるということ。
これは彼らにとっては、大事な大事なことなのです。

そのため、彼らは必死に努力をし上手に鳴く練習をしているというわけ。

春に、朗々と歌い上げるかのように

ほ～～～～～～～っ　ほっけっきょう～～～～～♪けっきょ　けっきょ　けっきょ　けきょけきょけきょけきょ・・・・

と鳴いているウグイスの声を聴くと人間ですら思わず拍手をしたくなるというもの。
ああいう上手な個体はきっとかなりモテるとみて間違いありません。

しかし、中にはどうにもこうにも上手になれない個体もいるようで・・・そういうウグイスはずっと独り身なんだとか。

歌の下手な私としては・・・ウグイスじゃなくてよかったと心から胸をなでおろす次第。

ホーホケキョはアイラブユー

ホーホケキョ！！

先ほども言いました通り、ホーホケキョは求愛のための鳴き声です。
つまり「愛を叫んでいる」わけです。

だれか僕のお嫁さんになってよ～～～

春に大声でオスがメスへのアピールのために鳴いているのです。

しかし、ウグイスは繁殖期の終わった夏もまだ「ホーホケキョ」しています。
夏はすでにカップル成立で子育てしている時期。

・・・ということは・・・次の彼女を見つけるため？？？

もうひとつのホーホケキョ

いえいえ、そうではありません。


カップル成立し、交尾をしたらウグイスのオスは巣営どころか育児にも全く参加をしません。
メスがワンオペで子育て頑張っているときに、いい声で歌など歌ってどうしようもない男だ！
・・・なんて言わないでください。

オスは直接は育児はしませんが、巣を外敵から守るために見張り役に徹するのです。
自然は外敵がいっぱい！これは大事な仕事です。

彼らが、カップル成立後もさえずるのは・・・・・・メスに「安心して子育てして！僕は巣を敵から守ってるよ！！ちゃんと見張ってるよ！」と伝えるためなんですね。

素敵男子じゃないですか？

歌は練習のたまもの

日本人であればだれもが知っているウグイス。

短歌や俳句などにも多く登場し、ホーホケキョは日本の春の定番の「音」でもあります。
つまり、昔から日本人はウグイスの声の美しさに魅了されてきたのです。

鶯谷という地名

東京に「鶯谷」という地名があります。
その昔、元禄年間に、上野寛永寺の門主がこの地に鶯を放ったのが鶯谷の名の由来だと言われています。

当時、寛永寺の門主というのは代々京都からやってくることが通例だったようで
その京都からやってきた門主の一人が「どうも江戸のウグイスはなまっとる！」と言って、京都から多くのウグイスを運ばせでこの地に放ったのだとか・・・。
私は当時の京の人間の江戸へのちょっとした嫌味も含まれるような気もしますが・・・

誰よりも上手く歌いたい！

実際にウグイスは「メスを獲得するためにいい声で鳴く」のです。

だから春先に、みんな一生懸命練習をするのです。
誰よりもいい声で鳴かなくては、メスを獲得できない！
つまりは、「いい声で鳴くウグイス」がいれば、その他のウグイスはもっと努力し、もっと練習してそれ以上にいい声で鳴くようになるのは当然です。
つまり、恋のライバルが増えるほど、美声に磨きがかかるってことですね。

歌が下手な江戸のウグイスの歌を上達させるために、京都から歌の上手なウグイスを連れてくるという行為は有効だったのかもしれません。

小笠原のウグイスは「ホーホケッ」

小笠原に住むウグイスがいます。
オガサワラハシナガウグイスという種類です。
そのオガサワラのウグイスは「ホーホケッ」としか鳴かないという話を何かの本で読んだことがあります。

「ホーホケキョ」をセットでインプットされている私たちからしたら、なんだか尻切れトンボでマヌケに聞こえます・・・
しかし、小さな島に住むウグイスは、繁殖の競争相手が少ないためそう頑張って「キョ」まで鳴く必要がないようなのです。

つまり、もしこの島で、ウグイスの個体数が増えたりすることがあれば・・・きっとそのうちみんな「ホーホケキョ」と鳴くことになるんでしょうね。

今日は、ウグイスについて書きました。
春の鳥！と間違われますが、実は留鳥で日本に１年中いる鳥です。

そして、その美声は、もって生まれた才能ではなく・・・彼らの練習の賜物。
恋のライバルに負けないように、全身全霊の力を込めて歌い上げているんですね。

それを知ると益々・・・
