サンコウチョウの声が聞こえます。
今年も日本へようこそおこしくださいました！
いったいどんな鳥さんでしょう？コアラと一緒に観察してみてね。

長い尾

この長い尾を見よ！

サンコウチョウといえば、まず頭に浮かぶのはあの長い尾。
あの長い尾は、繁殖時のオスのみに見られるものです。

体長はオスが４５ｃｍ、メスが１７ｃｍくらい。
え？そんなに？？かなり大きいのね！！と・・・
数字を見るとそう思う人もいらっしゃるかと思いますが、これは繁殖時の体長です。
つまり、クチバシの先から尾の先までを計測した数字なのです。
というわけで、ボディ部分のみでいうとスズメくらいの大きさの野鳥ですよ。
つまり、繁殖時のオスの尾は３０ｃｍくらいはあるということ！
長いですね！

しっぽの秘密

サンコウチョウが、長い尾をひらりひらりと翻して飛び回る姿は、まるで黒い天女のようです。

ちなみに、前述しました通りメスは尾は長くなく、オスの長い尾も繁殖時のスペシャルバージョン。
つまり、渡りの時期になるとあの長い尾は抜け落ちてしまいます。

確かに、あんな長い尾をひらひらと揺らして飛ぶのはメスの気を惹くにはもってこいかもしれませんが・・・渡りにはちょっと邪魔かもしれませんね～。

サンコウチョウのもうひとつの特徴は、コバルトブルーの嘴とアイリングです。

特に、オスのアイリングはとても目立ちます。（メスや若い個体は控え目）

アイリングというと、メジロを思い出す人も多いと思いますが・・・
実はメジロのアイリングは羽です。
小さな羽の集合体であのかわいい白いアイリングが形成されています。

しかし、サンコウチョウの場合は皮膚のようなものです。
日頃、アイリングといっしょくたに言われることが多いようですが・・・本来は、羽ではなく皮膚のようなものの場合は、アイリングではなく眼瞼輪というのが正しいようです。

メスはやはり地味

サンコウチョウのオスは、頭部は黒そして背面の色はやや紫味を帯びています。
しかし、メスは頭部は黒いですが背面は、茶褐色で全体的にオスより赤っぽい印象です。

また、前述の通りアイリングも細くあまり目立ちません。

この鳥においても、メスはオスよりちょっと地味な感じなんですよ。

夏鳥

サンコウチョウは、５月くらいになると日本に繁殖にやってくる夏鳥です。
冬は、中国の南部や東南アジアで過ごしますよ。

どこにいるの？

では、彼らを観察するにはどこに行けばいいのでしょう？

彼らは、平地からあまり高くない山（低山）で、かつ針葉樹林と広葉樹の境めあたりにいることが多いです。
どちらかというと、木の茂った暗い森にいることが多いですよ。

鳴き声は？

サンコウチョウは小さく、黒く、そして薄暗い森や林の木々の間を忙しくとびまわる鳥。
というわけで、なかなか見つけにくい鳥でもあります。

では、どうやって探せばいいのか・・・というと、やはり鳴き声。
彼らの鳴き声はとても特徴的です。

フィーチィー！ホイホイホイ！（さえずり）と鳴きます。昔の人は「月日星！ホイホイホイ！」と聞きなしたといわれています。
月、日（太陽）、星の３つの光を叫んでいるので、三光鳥（さんこうちょう）というわけなんて洒落てるんでしょうね。ちなみに、地鳴きは結構地味で「ギュィッ」「ギッギッ」と濁った短い音で鳴きます。

何を食べているの？

彼らは、昆虫食です。
また、サンコウチョウは、飛ぶのがとても上手です。
なので、昆虫を飛びながら捕らえるフライングキャッチが得意技！

常に木々の間を忙しく飛び回り、虫を捕まえますよ。

また、飛ぶのが上手な代わりに、歩くのはあまり得意ではありません。
その証拠に、サンコウチョウの脚は短くとっても華奢なんですよ。

観察のポイント

観察の場所

さて、前述の通り・・・サンコウチョウは、平地から低山の針葉樹林と広葉樹林の境目の薄暗い森を好みます。
杉の皮とクモの糸で、巣を作り上げるため、杉の木のある場所を探すのがポイント。
また、沢沿いの林を好む傾向が強いため、沢沿いで針葉樹と広葉樹の入り混じった場所を探すのがよさそうです。
暗い森、しかも木々の茂る季節に黒い小さな鳥がせわしなく飛び回るのですから、結構見つけるのは大変。

というわけで、探すポイントはやはり鳴き声。

鳴き声で探す

例の、ホイホイホイ！を頼りにするのが一番です。
しかし、キビタキなどのように頻繁には囀らないので、居そうな場所を見つけたら静かに耳を澄ませて待つのがいいですね！

ちなみに、日本へと渡って来た５月～６月初旬が一番囀りが聞こえる時期です。
つまり、ペアをつくるまでですね。
それ以降はあまり囀らなくなり、秋の渡りの時期（９月頃）にはほとんど囀りません。
そのため、やはり観察するのは５月～６月初旬がベストシーズンですね。

しかし・・・物まねの上手な鳥ガビチョウさんは、サンコウチョウの真似もとっても上手なのでだまされないようにしましょう。笑

一度とまった枝を見張る！

サンコウチョウの捕食は、飛びながら虫を捕まえるフライングキャッチです。
枝から飛び立ち、虫をキャッチすると、その後またその枝に戻ってくる可能性が高いので・・・
とまっているサンコウチョウをみつけたら、しばらく同じ枝をじっと観察しているとまた見られるかもしれません。

今日は、夏の人気者サンコウチョウについて書きました。
長い尾が、なんとも優美で人気のサンコウチョウ。

サンコウチョウもまたほかの鳥たちと同じように数の減少が懸念される野鳥です。
珍しく、そして美しい鳥で人気が高いため、「サンコウチョウがいる」といわれる場所に観察者が詰めかけてしまう例も多いようです。

彼らは繁殖のために日本にやってきます。
しかし、その優美な姿の人気者ゆえ、悲しい事態も起こっています。
現在、・・・人間の観察や撮影のための大きなストレスによって、繁殖を放棄する事例も多く報告されているようです。
観察をする場合、特に子育てしている巣などを観察する場合は、人間側の配慮も必要となります。

鳥の気持ちになろう

「ここは安心だ」「ここなら安全に子育てできる」と思って営巣した場所。
そこに、何十人もの人間が集まってきて大きなレンズを始終向けられる鳥のストレスは計り知れません。

もしろん・・・

「サンコウチョウのヒナが見たい！」
「子育てを観察したい！」

・・・という気持ちも充分に理解はできます。
バードウォッチングは、鳥を観察するアクティビティ。

優しい気持ちで野鳥観察


しかし、それは鳥を愛でよう、鳥のことを学ぼうとする気持ちが主軸に存在してのこと。

決して「誰より良い写真を撮ろう！」「人に自慢できるものを撮ろう」
「珍しい鳥を見てやろう」という気持ちが先んじてはならないと思います。
バードウォッチングはハンティングとは違います。

鳥について学ぼう、鳥を愛でようという気持ちを主軸があれば、きっと鳥にストレスのないようにしようという配慮が産まれるはず。
バードウォッチャーひとりひとりが、今一度、その気持ちを思い出して、改めて心に刻むことが大事かもしれません。
