燕の夫婦が電線で一休みしているよ。
いつも忙しく飛び回っているもんね。
町にお買い物に来たら、パン屋さんの軒先にもツバメさんの巣があったよ。
他の鳥さんと違って、人通りの多い出入り口なんかに巣をつくるのはなぜなんだろう？？

飛ぶのに特化したフォルム

ツバメの写真

ツバメは、全長約１７ｃｍ。
お腹は白く、背面はギラリとした青味がかった黒です。
光の加減によっては、背面はまるで鱗のように見えますよ。
また、胸の黒い横帯と、顎下と額の赤、燕尾服の語源にもなった二股に分かれた尾がポイントです。

そして、翼がとても大きく、体はまるでジェット機のようにほっそりとした筒形で、足は短め。
飛ぶのに特化した体つきをしています！

この時期、街中や河原などで燕を見る事は多いと思いますが、毎度その飛ぶスピードに驚かされます。
歩いていたら、ものすごいスピードでさっと前を横切られたり・・・
猛スピードで飛んでいる途中に急に方向転換したり！

燕って本当に飛ぶのが上手なんですね。

ツバメは、平均時速４０～５０Kmで飛ぶと言われています。
これでも結構早いと思いますが、全力で飛ぶときはナント！時速２００Kmで飛ぶというから驚きです。

歩くのは下手

飛ぶことに特化した体のつくりになっているため、飛ぶのが上手なツバメ。
しかし、歩くのは苦手な様子でほとんど地上に降りることはありません。
羽休めももっぱら電線など。
ただ、営巣の時期は地面に下りて巣材をゲットするので、地上で見られる機会もあるかもしれません。
猛スピードで飛び回り、なかなか観察が難しい鳥さんです。
というわけで、地面に降りているところを見かけたら、じっくり観察するチャンスですね！

ツバメの生態

主に夏鳥

ツバメは、春先に南国から飛来する夏鳥です。
（一部、国内で越冬するツバメもいるようです）

春先にやってきた燕は、４月から７月の間に営巣、そして産卵、子育てをしますよ！

燕の巣はみんな知ってるよね！

巣は、泥や枯草を唾液で固めて積み上げて作りますよ。

彼らは、河辺などで泥を口に含んで持ち帰り、器用にその小さな泥団子をレンガのように積み上げていくようにして巣をつくります。
そして、そうやって泥で外壁が出来上がると、今度は中に集めてきた枯草や羽毛を敷き詰め、卵やヒナたちが居心地のいい空間を作るのです。
つまり、ふっかふかの気持ちのいいベッドが完成したら、産卵です。
また、ツバメは平均４～５個の卵を産むと言われます。
というわけで、親鳥はヒナが４～５匹おさまるようなおうちを作らなくてはならないので、結構大変！

卵を産む前から、忙しいツバメさんなのです。

そんな大変な営巣ですので、昨年作った巣を利用する個体もいますよ。
リサイクル！再利用ですね。
時間をかけて丁寧に作られた巣ですから、翌年も少し手直しすれば使えるのです。

もし、あなたの家の軒先にツバメさんが巣をつくって子育てを終え、無事にヒナが巣立って行ったとしても・・・
その巣を落とさずにいてあげましょう。
なぜなら、彼らがまた来年その巣を利用する可能性はとても高いのですから！

何を食べているの？

ツバメは主に、小さな虫を食べています。

つまり、お得意の飛行能力を駆使し、飛び回りながら飛行している虫をキャッチ！
しかも、燕は大食漢。
あの小さなボディですが、やはり飛び回るのでエネルギーを使うためでしょうか？
たくさんの虫を食べる必要があります。
そのため、彼らは１日中飛び回り・・・なんと何百匹もの虫を捕食するんだそうですよ。

う～～～ん・・・すごいなツバメさん。

ツバメは、チュビチュビ　ビリュリュルルルルル～という声で鳴きます。
体は小さいのですが、声は結構大きいのでびっくりしますよ。

ちなみに、「聞きなし」では

人間とツバメの「良い関係」

なぜソコに・・・？？

毎年、ちょっと不思議になりませんか？

たとえば、コンビニエンスストアの出入り口付近
そういえば、あのパン屋さんや八百屋さんの軒先
はたまた、駅の入口のせわしない天井
そうそう、家の玄関や出入りの多い車庫の中・・・などなど。

彼らは、なんだか人通りの多いせわしない場所に営巣しますよね。

「もっと落ち着いた場所で子育てした方がいいんじゃないの？？」

なんて・・・おせっかいながら、そんなことを思ってしまいます。
スズメやカラスも人と距離の近い鳥ですし、街に営巣しますが・・・さすがにツバメほど人目に付く場所には営巣しません。

わざと人目に付く場所を選ぶ

ツバメはちょっとオッチョコチョイなんじゃないか？
他の野鳥に比べて、危機感薄すぎるんじゃないか？

なんて思う人もいるかもしれませんが、さにあらず。

ところが、ツバメは、わざと人目に付く場所を選んで巣をつくっているのです！
それは、家内安全のため！

人間の近くにいれば安心！！

ツバメは、人間の目につく場所に巣をつくることで外敵から身を守ることが出来ることを知っています。
つまり、カラスや蛇など・・・卵やヒナを狙う外敵は、人間が頻繁に出入りし目につく場所には、そうそう現れにくいことを知っているのです。

う～～ん賢い。

そして、人間・・・ツバメさんに信頼されてる～～～～！

ヒトとツバメの共生関係

これは、何もツバメが人を一方的に信頼してのことではありません。
昔から、ヒトもまた燕を大事にしてきました。

その昔、多くの日本人は農業に従事していました。
前述の通り、燕は１日にたくさんの虫を捕ります。
農家にとって、害虫をたくさん食べてくれる彼らは「益鳥」。
つまり、大事されたんですね。

商売繁盛？

また、商売家にとってはツバメは縁起のいい鳥として知られていました。
そのツバメが軒先に営巣すると、商売繁盛になると信じられていたのですね。
つまり、燕さんは大事なお客様でした。

というわけで、人とツバメはwin-winの関係。
つまり、共生関係というわけです。

今日は、燕について書きました。

昔は５月くらいになると、あちこちをツバメがせわしなく飛び回る姿が見えました。
そして、あっちの軒先こっちの軒先からツバメのヒナの気配がしたものです。
しかし、最近ではその気配もぐっと減った気がします。
残念なことに、ツバメの数も近年減少しているのです。

人と共生関係の鳥が数を減らしている・・・というのはとってもさみしい事態。
ちょっと世知辛い世の中になっちゃったのかな？

ツバメはラッキーバード？

しかし、それでも、家の玄関や商店の店先、駅の出入り口などでフン受けを見かけます。
【ツバメが子育て中です。あたたかく見守ってください】なんて注意書きを見ると、思わずほっこりした気持ちになり思わず微笑んでしまいます。
そして、見上げた先に黄色いお口のヒナが並んでいるのが見えたりしたら・・・この上なくハッピー＆ラッキーな心持になります。

商売繁盛や金運上昇につながるか否かはわかりませんが、そんな命の成長を目撃できるささやかな幸せが身近にあるって素敵。
人の身近で営巣し子育てを見せてくれるツバメさんは、やっぱり幸運を呼ぶ縁起のいい鳥に違いないですね。
